A flat screen display technology that operates without the use of a backlight. Not to be confused with an LED display (which is simply an LCD display with an LED backlight), each microscopic LED within an OLED receives an electric current through layers of organic material. Depending on which molecules in the organic material the electricity passes through, different colors will light up. Because OLED displays don’t rely on a backlight, they can achieve much more flexible designs with a higher contrast ratio than that which is available from LCD monitors.
